This Weeks Music School: Circle of Fifths Remix (With Major 7ths)

New Today!!

Today is January 4,2011 and since the recent launch of the Circle of Fifths post we have gotten an overwhelming response and people are intrested in learning more about the Circle of Fifths. Here is just a quick recap of the Circle of Fifths

So just to review in music we can refer to scales as letters or as numbers. For example, in the Key of C C Major = C D E F G A B C or 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

The number system is a great tool to learn when it comes to learning progressions. Essentially to break down what I stated above is that C represents the 1 tone you continue forward until you reach to 8 which is C. The most popular progression when it comes to the Circle of Fifths is the 7-3-6-2-5-1 progression.

It is through the interval of the perfect fifth that keys are related to each other. If we start with C, we count up a perfect fifth to find the note G for the scale with one sharp; we count up a perfect fifth from G to find the keynote D for the scale with two sharps, and so on until we reach C# with seven sharps.

This is demonstrated in the picture down below

Now onto today's mini lesson

A while back I gave a lesson on the Circle of Fifths but this time I am going to incorporate those Major 7ths on Steroids.

Key of Ab (6-#5-5-1-4)

6 chord (F)----->F-C-G/Ab-Eb-G-Bb
Sharp 5 chord-E-B-E/G-A-D-Gb-A
5 chord-Eb-Bb/Gb-Db-F-Ab
1 chord-Ab-Eb/Gb-B-E-Ab
4 chord-Db-Ab-Db/F-Bb-C-F or C-Eb-F-Ab

This is an excellent use of the Circle of Fifths chord progression. All of these chords use the Major 7th principle on Steroids.

If you are having difficulty in using or understanding the Circle of Fifths have a look back on our posting

If you don't understand or are having difficulties on the Major 7th's principles have visit the blogpost on that as well. We go into great detail on the Major 7th's principles

Essentially to create a major 7th it's just the 1-3-5-7 of the note.
