What's The Job of A Second Keyboard Player?

Greetings, everyone

One question or challenge that every musician goes through when working with someone is what is their role in enhancing the music. Today, I am here to provide some insight into what the job of a second keyboard player is.

In my experience, the job of the second keyboard is to backup and pad with the main keyboard player. This maybe through playing horns, synth, strings, flute etc.. The second keyboard player is to fill in the gaps left by the main keyboardist. Somethings to remember are that you and the rest of the band need to be locked together. (What I mean is that you need to communicate). If they are not locked together then what you play may be just noise. One other things that musicians have a challenge with is that thew main keyboardist may play chords that may clash with what you are are playing. If that does become an issue I would suggest that you speak to the keyboardist. Just remember that as a second keyboardist you are considered equal and that you are brought in to enhance the music, the dynamics and the flow and to ultimately work together with the band to succeed.

I just want to know what are your thoughts on the job of a second keyboardist and what experiences have you had? Tell us in the comments section below.
