Music Technology: Musicians and the iPad

April 27, 2011

With the recent release of the iPad 2, I was shocked because there are so many advancements in this new technology. I recently took one to live gig with some midi software attached to this as well as a midi keyboard. I was completely impressed because considering the fact that with software and the iPad compatibility. It was so easy to use a backing track with the iPad on Garageband. Here are just some of my experiences with the iPad's and some information that I would like to pass on to other musicians.

Let's look at the many things that the iPad can do:

-Thinner, Sleeker
-Portable
-Camera
-Touch screen capabilities
-Great for musicians and people who are on the go and
the list goes on and on.

My view on this is that whether you have an iPad or iPad 2 some of the apps that you should be aware of:

1) Guitar Lab

As we know music lessons are expensive and that hiring a teacher cost on average 40 + an hour may be more. Guitar Lab is an alternative to this and this excellent app is good for anyone wants to learn to play guitar. The app streams guitar lessons to your iPad (as long as you have WiFi connection or 3G) and this includes text, music notation and guitar tabs so you can practice guitar where ever and when ever. There is also additional materials that you can also purchase through the app itself.

Price: Free

2) Piano Man

Put it this way considering that this is FREE. This is like the musicians bible to Guitar Hero. This app is great for piano players to practice timing and tempo. Even if you can't read sheet music thats ok because this allows you to learn with or without it. What I really like about it is that it is another great training tool to help musicians with ear training. There's more because it also allows you to have a battle mode with people across the world and it is great for bragging rights as well.

Price: Free

3) GarageBand

Out of all the apps out there for musicians this is definitely a MUST have! You can basically use you backing tracks and you sounds if you are on a live gig. As well you can record, mute, edit your tracks even while on the go. One thing I suggest is that you make sure that if you decide to use GarageBand on a live gig you prep before hand.

Cost: $4.99

Summary: There are many apps out there for musicians and Yes some of them are expensive however, in the long run you will definitely be happier with the progress that you have made. These are my top three apps every musician should have.

Best Wishes,
