Alright, we have reached day 11 of the 12 Days of Music and I am surprised because of the fact that Christmas is tomorrow. I was Christmas Shed last night with a couple of friends. It was a group of guitarist, keyboardist and a few drummers. It was my first Christmas Shed with so many musicians. It was an interesting experience. To my surprise, I was grooving along with them and one of the keyboardist played a nice hot chord that peaked my interest. So I walked over to the keyboardist and asked him if he could show me the chord. Now to my expectation, I was hoping that he would share the chord with me because we are with a group of friends and we all know each other. He didn't show me the chord? I was a little bit lost at that moment but my question is: Have you ever had that experience where there are musicians who don't want to share their secrets with you? I mean I can understand why but shouldn't you be open to sharing. How many times do you get the opportunity to play together with musicians and pick their brain?....Not many if that!
The musician who didn't want to share chords then came around and ultimately shared the knowledge that he had. I learned a lot and that chord was a golden nugget. I would be glad to do it again because it was a great experience. It was a great way to shed through music.
One of things that should be noted is that shedding with other musicians is a great opportunity because of the following reasons:
1) Allows you to experience different music styles from Jazz,R&B etc..
2) Improve teamwork and communication between different musicians
3) Gain instant access to chords, runs and riffs
4) Learn about different music interpretations
5) See different musicians at their best enjoying what they love!
Most Importantly: HAVING FUN!!!
The musicians that I was with were "beasts" on their instrument. It was a little intimidating at first when you have musicians who have a better skill set but just remember to have fun and enjoy what you love. It's a great way to experience music and learn through the different teachings. I would recommend that if you are musician or are a musician who is just learning the basics try to find a mentor to shed with. No matter what instrument you play you can always take something away that is valuable. You can transform your self as a musician
The main thing that I want to pass on is that:
1) Musicians need to be open to new experiences
2) Sharing tricks and tips is a great way to grow as a musician
3) Good experience when you can learn from others
If you don't have the opportunity to learn from other musicians in your areas what I would suggest is to check out our store and take a look at the many different DVD's availiable that focus on the instrument of your choosing.
I hope this knowledge find you well.
Best Wishes
