This Week's Music School: Discover The Power of The Flip

Today, we are going to do a weekend music school post. We have been receiving a lot emails from musicians who are really interested in taking there playing to a new level. This Weeks Music School is on the Flip 7 or in other words the Flatted 7th chord. The best way to use this chord is very interesting. It can be substituted for the 5 chord.

Let's look at the Key of Ab

We are going to be focusing on the the 2-6 progression. This is from the Bb to the F

Chords L.H/R.H

Bb/Ab-C-Db-F
F/Eb-G-Ab-F

Try adding this passing chord before you go to the F. The passing chord is on the C

F-A-Bb-D/F-A-C

If you want to add some flare try going down chromatically from the A to the F by rolling the notes.

To flip this your are going to play Db on your left hand or an F on your left. Either one will take you to the same place. Just remember that you need to be in sync with your bass player to make this work. This is a great passing chord.

DbF/B-D-F-G-Bb

This chord will take you to the Flip 7 or The Flatted 7 which is Gb

Gb/Bb-Eb-F-Bb

This is a great progression to use when you want to substitute for the 5 chord or just as a regular groove to play with friends.

If your serious about your playing and would like to take this to the next level here are some of my recommendations:
